How to Change the Handlebar Grips on a Bicycle

As you become a more capable rider, you may notice that the handlebar grips on your bicycle no longer suit you. It may also be that the grips have become worn from continuous use or damaged in some way. For whatever reason, at some point you may want to change out your grips. With some simple tools and supplies you can replace your handlebar grips at home.  This relatively easy procedure usually takes less than an hour to perform.

Step 1 : Remove any end plugs from the handlebars. Loosen the clamps on the brake and shifter levers with the Allen wrench, and slide them in toward the center of the handlebars.

Step 2 : Slide the screwdriver into the end of the handlebar grip to create an opening by lifting the grip away from the handlebars. Insert the tube on the WD40 can, and spray once or twice into the opening.

Step 3 : Rotate the grip back and forth several times while pulling on the grip. As the grip comes loose, slide it off the handle bars. Wipe off all of the WD40 from the handlebar with the shop rag.

Step 4 : Spray a small amount of hairspray into the new handlebar grip. While the hair spray is still wet, quickly slide the new grip in place onto the handlebar. The hair spray will eventually dry, holding the grip in place.

Step 5 : Reposition the brake and shifter levers and tighten their clamps. Reinstall the end plugs, if necessary.

Step 6 : Repeat these steps to change the opposite handlebar grip.
